Joe Theismann cites “peer pressure” as one of reasons for wearing single-bar facemark.
The last non-kicker to wear a single-bar facemask was Washington quarterback Joe Theismann. It’s an iconic look of days gone by, giving the player minimal protection from fists, forearms, elbows, knees, and feet.
In a recent visit to PFT Live, Chris Simms and I asked Theismann why he chose to wear such limited face protection.
“Actually, stupidity was probably a driving force,” he said. “I’ve had seven broken noses and cosmetic dentistry is a great thing for my front teeth. Got those knocked out by Byron Hunt. . . . When I hand it off the two bars bothered me. Chris, you know it. We’re finicky when it comes to the quarterback position. I didn’t wear anything on my right arm. I didn’t wear a wrist band. I wore an elbow pad on my left, but nothing on my right. The way the ball feels in your hand, the way you see things, we’re probably the most finicky people in the game when it comes to that. For me it just bothered me.
“Plus, there’s something else nobody really knows, and I don’t share it a lot. Billy Kilmer and Sonny Jurgensen both wore single bars. Now, what would it have looked like if I wore a double bar? A little bit of peer pressure.”
The single-bar facemask is long gone from football. Yes, it looked good. From a safety standpoint, however, there’s no reason to have so much of the player’s face exposed.

Joe thiesman football picks.
As much as the Houston Texans have downplayed the possibility of trading quarterback Deshaun Watson this offseason, the QB’s cryptic tweets and reported feelings toward the organization have fueled speculation and overpowered any comments GM Nick Caserio has made.
With many QB-needy teams expected to be active in the market for signal callers, the price tag to acquire Watson would be enormous. The Washington Football Team, who holds all of its first-round picks moving forward, could be a contender for Watson if it’s willing to bid high enough.
However, not everyone in D.C. would be in favor of such a move. Former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann joined the Washington Football Talk podcast for an upcoming episode and talked about the package that the team would have to assemble in order to get Watson.
“Deshaun Watson is not on the top of my list,” Theismann said. “And not because of his talent. But I think that the price you would have to pay to get him doesn’t make any sense. Look at what we’ve been able to do over the last four years with first-round picks. That’s the essence of our defense and we’ve got them for at least two or three years until those contracts start expiring.
“I think the No. 1 [picks are] very valuable to us. All of our draft picks are valuable at this stage as Martin [Mayhew] and Marty [Hurney] start to build and Ron [Rivera] start to build this football team. We’ve built a good foundation; they want to build it going forward.”
Theismann mentioned Wednesday morning on 106.7 The Fan’s Sports Junkies that one “really stupid” trade idea he’d seen tossed around in the media was two first-round picks and defensive end Chase Young for Watson. His response: “Are you out of your mind?”
There’s no denying Watson’s talent. But Theismann prefers to see Washington target a player such as Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Marcus Mariota and use a Day 2 or 3 draft pick on a quarterback that can be developed behind him.

Which Team Will Win Super Bowl LV? Joe Theismann Shares His Take.
The answer might (or might not) surprise you.
Joe Theismann knows a thing or two about what makes a good quarterback.
So this year’s Super Bowl LV matchup between Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs has him pretty amped up.
But which elite signal-caller does Theismann think will come out on top? The former quarterback offered his take Wednesday during an appearance with Yahoo! Finance.
“I like Kansas City,” Theismann said. “I think Patrick Mahomes will once against be the MVP — he or Travis Kelce. I think one of those two will the be MVP. I just think Patrick is magical when it comes to playing the position. And even though both of their starting tackles are out, I think he has the ability to make plays, and there’s so much speed on the offensive side of the ball.”
But Theismann knows better than to count out TB12.
“Now, having said that, if Tampa Bay makes them go 10-, 11-, 12-play drives on Kansas City on offense, it could be a different kind of a football game. I know these two teams played before and Kansas City basically had their way with it, but this an entirely different Tampa Bay football team. And can you ever really count Tom Brady out of anything? I mean, really?”
We’ll see if his predictions come true Sunday when the Bucs and Chiefs square off in what is sure to be an epic Super Bowl battle.

Joe Theismann Would Take Wilson Over Lawrence.
For most draft pundits, Trevor Lawrence will go No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but former NFL great Joe Theismann would take another quarterback first if he had a choice in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft.
"I think (BYU quarterback) Zach (Wilson), obviously, I just love the way he throws the football. It is hard to teach," Theismann said when he joined CBS HQ. "We have seen people learn to perfect it a little bit. He has all the skills; he has a live arm, he has a strong arm, he can put touch on it, he can gun it. He is 6'3", he is not a small guy. He moves around with great athleticism. I think, to me, watching him play quarterback, he looks really ready."
Wilson is widely thought to be the second QB off the board after Lawrence, but Theismann favors Wilson and his 11-1 showing last season with the Cougars.
"Trevor Lawrence is certainly a big kid who can run well, surrounded by terrific talent at Clemson. It is a little bit like Mac Jones at Alabama," Theismann said. "They are surrounded by terrific talent and sometimes you look at that talent and say 'did that help the position a lot.
"I think in the case of Trevor, being a young guy and as strong and physical as he is, he will have a great opportunity to learn, as will Mac and all the young guys, Justin Fields, as well, out of Ohio State. I just think coming into this particular draft, Zach checks all of the boxes for me. Personally, my choice. My guy. It looks like the Jets may be the ones taking him at 2, which potentially puts Sam Darnold on the market or somewhere else."
Theismann may be in a small crowd that believes someone other than Lawrence should be taken first, but with the amount of pressure to make the right choice for your franchise, any NFL GM could make the wrong decision on draft night.
With the Super Bowl looming, all eyes will soon be on the NFL Draft set for April 29th.

Joe Theismann criticizes Deshaun Watson for trying to force trade from Texans.
As it stands, Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is like Achilles in his tent: Feeling aggrieved with team ownership, Watson seems dead-set on refusing to play for the Texans in 2021, and has gone so far as to request a trade from the team that chose him with the No. 12-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. It's a course of action that hasn't sat well with NFL quarterbacks from past generations: Green Bay Packers legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre made headlines when he criticized Watson, and another Super Bowl-winning quarterback also takes issue with what Watson is trying to do.
Speaking on The Team 980 in Washington D.C., Washington Redskins (now Washington Football Team) great and 1983 NFL MVP Joe Theismann criticized Watson for his trade request, arguing that Watson should honor the four-year, $178 million contract he signed just last September.
"Four months into a new (contract) and now you’re not happy? Why did you sign the deal?", said Theismann, per Matthew Paras of the Washington Times .
Watson's discontent has been a product of issues with team owner Cal McNair, as Watson was reportedly incensed by the Texans not considering nor consulting with his recommended candidates for the team's general manager job. What has followed since has been perhaps the most high-profile example of star NFL players turning into bad actors to try and force their way to another team - Such as when Jamal Adams forced the New York Jets to trade him to the Seattle Seahawks over a contract dispute.
In that regard, NFL players have been taking their cue from NBA players, who have more control over where they play by leveraging their superstardom and the impact of their individual talent. But compared to basketball, football is far more of a team sport - And in Theismann's belief, Watson is not in the sort of situation where he is qualified to have a strong say in personnel matters.
"The Watson (situation) I scratch my head over," said Theismann. "This isn't the NBA."
Theismann's comments echoed Brett Favre's criticism of Watson, as the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback claimed that it was "unheard of" in his era for a player to express his displeasure with his team the way Watson is now.
"I think you play. You get paid a ton of money to do a certain job and just do it and let the chips fall where they may," Favre told Yahoo! Sports . "I think we make too much money to voice an opinion, but I’m not saying he’s wrong. Again, I think it’s a different day and time, and it will be interesting to see how the organization handles it."
The standoff between Watson and the Texans continues a series of unfortunate events over the past year that have taken place under the watch of Cal McNair, who was named CEO of the team in 2019 after the death of his father and team founder Bob McNair. The Texans plummeted from the Divisional Round of the Playoffs in 2019 to 4-12 in a 2020 season that saw the firing of head coach Bill O'Brien and a wasted season for Watson.
