п»їBarcelona vs. Liverpool score: Messi's magic puts Barca on brink of Champions League final.
Led by Lionel Messi, Barca ran away from the Reds in the second half.
Barcelona is closing in on an appearance in the Champions League final after destroying Liverpool 3-0 on Wednesday in their semifinal first leg at Camp Nou. Luis Suarez scored the opener against his former team in the first half before Lionel Messi added two goals in the second half, with his second being one of his best free-kick goals ever.
Here's what to know and see:
First half.
Though Liverpool started the game better than the hosts, it was Barca who struck first midway through the first half. Jordi Alba played a world-class ball diagonally toward the front post, and Suarez got in front of Virgil van Dijk and behind Joel Matip to redirect it into the goal. Take a look:
Suarez scores against his former club to give Barcelona the lead 🔴🔵
Second half.
Barcelona added two goals in the second half, and both were from Messi. In the 75th minute, Messi walked the ball into the net off a rebound from Luis Suarez:
And then he pulled off one of his greatest UCL free kicks with this ridiculous goal in the 82nd minute, going upper 90 on Alisson:
It was a dominant scoreline and one Liverpool will find difficult to digest. Mohamed Salah hit the post in the second half, and James Milner missed a golden chance inside the box as the Reds stare elimination right in the face.
Goal scorers.
вљЅ Barcelona - Suarez (26') вљЅ Barcelona - Messi (75') вљЅ Barcelona - Messi (82')
Game-changing moment.
It was the third goal, Messi's second. At 2-0, Liverpool still had the realistic possibility of going back to Anfield and winning 2-0 to force extra time. But at 3-0, it's almost as if this is killed off already.
Player of the game.
Messi because of those two goals, but Alba was very good as well. Barca's superstar came alive and probably put this tie away with those crucial goals. Another resounding result.
The most telling statistic.
Liverpool had 15 shots to Barca's 12, and both had five shots on goal. But look at the scoreline, and it just tells you how clinical the Spanish club was. This match could have been 5-0 as it could have been 3-2. Barca was just sharper when it mattered most.
Key coaching decision.
Jurgen Klopp started Joe Gomez at right back. Gomez has missed a lot of time due to injury, so why not go with Trent Alexander-Arnold there? Liverpool had a few free kicks where Alexander-Arnold could have been a factor, and his speed and tenacity perhaps would have helped on the right side where Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez had tons of space.
What the result means.
This means Barca can almost start packing its bags for the June 1 final. The focus will be simply going to Anfield and getting a goal, because if the team does, Liverpool will have to score five times, and that's probably not going to happen. Liverpool must find the balance of going forward and defending, because if they concede just once, it's pretty much over.
What's next.
The semifinal second leg is next Tuesday at Anfield at 3 p.m. ET. You can watch the game on fuboTV (Try for free).

Liverpool vs. Barcelona score: Reds pull off monumental Champions League comeback, advance to final.
The Reds are somehow through to the final.
Liverpool entered the second leg of the Champions League semifinal on Tuesday facing what was viewed as an improbable 3-0 deficit. The Reds had the support of the Anfield crowd but were without the services of Mohamed Salah (head) and Roberto Firmino (muscular) due to injuries. The Reds somehow overcame the long odds and pulled off an incredible 4-0 victory to advance to the Champions League final on June 1 in Madrid, Spain against the winner of Tottenham vs. Ajax. Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum both scored twice, with three of Liverpool's goals coming in the second half.
Barcelona, meanwhile, crashed out of the Champions League by blowing an enormous lead for the second consecutive season in unbelievable fashion.
After Origi's first goal in the opening minutes, Liverpool's dominance continued. The team was stronger on the ball, looked more confident and never gave up, and in the second half everything went right.
Minutes after coming on, Wijnaldum finished this ball inside the box to make it 2-0, leaving Liverpool a goal away from potentially forcing extra time:
Then just three minutes later, Wijnaldum did it again with a header goal:
As the match seemed destined for extra time, Liverpool caught Barcelona napping with a corner kick incoming. Trent Alexander-Arnold walked away from the ball as if he was giving up the set piece, but then he quickly saw Origi all alone and took it, setting up an absolutely jaw-dropping fourth goal :
With that, the comeback was complete and Barca fell short of its goal, as it has done each of the last four UCL seasons.
Goal scorers.
вљЅ Liverpool - Origi (7') вљЅ Liverpool - Wijnaldum (54') вљЅ Liverpool - Wijnaldum (56') вљЅ Liverpool - Origi (79')
Game-changing moment.
It's the last goal because of how sleek it was. Alexander-Arnold, who just reached double-digit assists in the Premier League, had two more tonight. The goal caught every Barcelona player off guard and it was the difference in the end.
Player of the game.
Alisson in goal for Barca. He had five saves, including a huge one at the end of the first half on Jordi Alba that could have put the game away. The goals will get all the credit, but the Brazilian star deserves plenty of it for being a sure thing in goal in this one:
The most telling statistic.
11 games. That's how many matches Barca had gone unbeaten in the Champions League. They scored 26 goals and conceded just six in those matches, yet in this one they score zero and concede four.
Key coaching decision.
How about putting Wijnaldum in for the second half? Aside from his goals, he was also so good in the middle on the ball. He also showed a bit of flair, but his passing was crisp and allowed his team to control the ball and the pace.
What's next.
The second semifinalist will be known on Wednesday when Ajax hosts Tottenham with the Dutch side leading 1-0. The final is on June 1 in Madrid, and both remaining matches can be watched on fuboTV (Try for free).

Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona (Agg: 4-3): Liverpool complete stunning comeback to reach Champions League final.
Report on historic Anfield night as Giorginio Wijnaldum (2) and Divock Origi (2) send Liverpool to second successive Champions League final.
By Gerard Brand.
Wednesday 8 May 2019 13:32, UK.
Liverpool completed one of the greatest comebacks in football history, beating Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield and 4-3 on aggregate to reach the Champions League final.
Looking to become only the third team in the competition's history to come back from three goals down after the first leg of a semi-final, Liverpool took an early lead through Divock Origi's tap in (7) to give Anfield hope, before two goals in two second-half minutes brought them level.

Half-time substitute Georginio Wijnaldum first saw his low drive sneak past Marc-Andre ter Stegen (54), and the Dutchman took the roof off Anfield as his precise header from Xherdan Shaqiri's cross found the corner of Barca's net (56).
And the comeback was complete in bizarre and jaw-dropping fashion as Trent Alexander-Arnold's cheeky corner caught Barcelona off guard, allowing the unmarked Origi to turn home his second (79), having played most of this season as a bit-part player.

How Liverpool completed mission impossible.
Liverpool had a mountain to climb, but the frantic opening worked in their favour as Jordi Alba's poor header allowed Sadio Mane to feed Henderson, who drove into the area and forced a low stop from Ter Stegen, only for Origi to follow up and finish from close range.
Anfield erupted as Barca's defence cracked, but they eventually settled after 15 minutes as Lionel Messi forced a good save from Alisson from 12 yards, and the Liverpool goalkeeper was again at his best to parry away Philippe Coutinho's placed effort from the left of the box.

Luis Suarez, once a hero at Anfield, was soon being roundly jeered by the home fans for creating mischief among Liverpool's defence, with replays showing he may have kicked out at Andrew Robertson as the two ran beside each other.
Robertson had to be replaced at half-time by Wijnaldum, after Alisson had again kept the score at 1-0 with a fine block from Jordi Alba at close range following Messi's sublime through ball.
The breakneck speed continued after half-time as Ter Stegen showed fine reflexes to block Virgil van Dijk's backheeled volley from a corner, before Alisson made yet another smart save from Suarez's low drive.
Team news.
Xherdan Shaqiri replaced the injured Mo Salah, while Divock Origi started in place of Daniel Sturridge. Gini Wijnaldum also came out of midfield, replaced by James Milner, while Joel Matip came in for Dejan Lovren.
Barca stuck with the same XI that secured a 3-0 advantage in the first leg; Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho once again started against their former club.
It began to feel like another of those European nights at Anfield as Wijnaldum doubled Liverpool's lead with a low drive from 12 yards from Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross, although Ter Stegen should have done better with the effort.
And just 122 seconds after his first, Wijnaldum struck again, meeting a Shaqiri cross from the left with a fine header, but Liverpool weren't settling for extra time.
While Barcelona re-organised for a corner, Alexander-Arnold drilled a quick corner into Origi's path, eight yards out, and the Belgian made no mistake, glancing into the top left corner with his right foot.
Liverpool weathered the storm in the final stages, sending Anfield into a frenzy on yet another historic night for the five-time European Cup winners.

Klopp: It was overwhelming.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was almost lost for words as he tried to express his feelings after the game.
He told BT Sport : "The whole game. The whole performance was too much. It was overwhelming. I watched in my life so many football games but I can't remember many like this.
"Winning is already difficult but winning with a clean sheet, I don't know how the boys did it. I saw James Milner crying after the game on the pitch, it means so much to all of us. There are more important things in the world but creating this kind of atmosphere is so special.
"It's 10 past 10, most of your children are probably in bed but these boys are f*****g talented giants. It's unbelievable.
"Fine me if you want. I'm not native so I don't have better words for it."

Anfield inspires Liverpool again.
Liverpool stunned Barcelona but this club - and these fans - have a way of making the impossible seem possible.
Adam Bate was at Anfield on a night when, against the odds, belief was in the air from the outset.
Murphy: Insurmountable achievement.
Speaking on The Debate after the game, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy waxed lyrical about the historic victory at Anfield, particularly given their injuries and having watched Man City take the lead in the title race just 24 hours before.
"I feel emotional, I've got goosebumps watching the celebrations. They achieved something insurmountable tonight. They lost Firmino and Salah, they were unlucky in the last game, City won last night, how they pick themselves up to produce a performance of that quality is amazing.
"The initiative to get the winner from Alexander-Arnold and Origi, in such a frenetic situation. It was a team performance, helped by a wonderful crowd, a wonderful atmosphere. Every single one of them was top drawer. It was just sensational."
Valverde: We were rolled over.
Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde admits his side were "rolled over" and "blown away" by Liverpool.
"They have been really strong, they played really well and they kind of us rolled us over, really. It is a terrible result for our fans and for ourselves but credit is due to Liverpool.
"You're going to suffer, the fans will suffer as well. That's what it is like. We didn't expect a situation like this. At the moment we're blown away, it's terrible."

Barcelona Team news.
Ernesto Valverde’s men have officially won the La Liga title. The Catalans have been in imperial form this season. They are unbeaten at home since November 2018 and will be eager to keep the record going on Wednesday.
Barca have underperformed in the Champions League over the past couple of years. One of the most successful teams in Spain now wants to conquer Europe and reclaim the throne from their fierce rivals Real Madrid. They are given a tough draw as Liverpool have same aspirations this season. With Leo Messi holding the reins at Camp Nou however, Barcelona are widely predicted to win the first leg. Blaugrana won seven straight matches at home. During that time they conceded only three goals. Their head-to-head record does not offer great assurances though, as hosts have yet to beat Reds in three attempts.
Liverpool Team news.
Jurgen Klopp has transformed the Anfield-based club. The Reds have become a team that is difficult to beat. They are still in contention for the Premier League title but will also focus on the Champions League.
They lost the final last season against Real Madrid and this is their chance now. The last time Liverpool travelled to Catalonia, they won 2-1 and will be eager to repeat the result. It will be easier said than done, however. Klopp will rest faith in his team’s great form which saw them win last five away matches. Furthermore, the Reds have yet to lose a game on the road wince January. With Mohamed Salah and Sadio Made in excellent shape, Reds fans have plenty of betting tips to hope for. Especially after the rampant 5-0 win over Huddersfield last time out.
